Instructor Review allows for students to submit their written assignments to their instructor and, in turn, the instructor will review their submissions for a final grade. Instructor Review assignments do not involve any student-to-student interaction.
Creating an Instructor Review Assignment
Log in to the online Grade Book, select the Assignments tab, and press Smart Review from the list provided.
On the following page, select "New Assignment" from the right-hand side of the page.
First, give the assignment a name. Then, you will set your Settings for this assignment.
Assignment Type
Select Instructor Review as the Assignment Type. For Instructor Review assignments, students will upload papers to the instructor, and the instructor will grade the quality of the writing.
Permissions
Choose whether to Share this assignment with fellow instructors, leave the assignment Unshared, or to mark the assignment as Shared & Locked. If the assignment is Shared & Locked, it cannot be edited by fellow instructors.
Peer → Instructor Review Points
Choose how many points are possible for the quality of the writing of student submissions.
Then, you will set your Details settings for this assignment. Note: Details settings are optional.
The Details tab allows you to provide written instructions directly to students for both the Peer Upload and the Peer Review.
Add Description
Choose whether to add a written description for students to use while uploading their Smart Review assignment. If the option is set to "No", you will not be able to enter Instructions below.
Peer → Instructor Review
Here you can provide written instructions directly to students for this Smart Review assignment.
Then, you will set your Rubric settings for this assignment. Note: Rubric settings are optional.
The Rubric tab allows you to include a custom rubric for reviewing assignments. Add as many categories as desired.
Category
Name the specific category that will be added to the rubric.
Rating
Reviewers will use these values to rate the quality of the writing. These values will not affect the writer's grade unless you choose to use the sum of the rubric ratings when you enter the grade manually.
Actions
Add the new category when all settings are complete. You can also Remove any undesired categories from the grading rubric.
Then, you will set your Assign settings for this Instructor Review assignment. Here is where you will choose which section(s) to assign the assignment to, set the window of time that students will have to submit their assignment, and also set specific grading settings.
Add Section
Select Add Section to choose which sections this Smart Review assignment will be assigned to. (Course Administrators can assign Smart Review assignments to all sections in the Grade Book.)
Actions
a. Peer → Instructor Upload Date/Time: Select the calendar icon from the Actions column to set the date and time range the assignment will be available to students. You can also access the Peer → Instructor Upload Date/Time action by selecting the checkbox next to the section name and selecting Peer → Instructor Upload.
b. Settings (Instructor Upload): Select the gear icon from the Actions column to establish preferred grading settings for this assignment. In the Settings (Instructor Upload) pop-up window, choose whether to record this assignment grade in your Grade Book, select which assignment group the assignment falls under, set the weight of the assignment, and when to release assignment grades to students.
c. Remove Section: Select the Remove icon under the Actions column to un-assign the assignment from the section. You can also un-assign this assignment by selecting the checkbox next to the section name and choosing to Remove the section.
When all of your settings are established, select Save & Finish to finalize the Instructor Review assignment.
