Instructors have the ability to add or hide content to the Learn mode of student lessons using the Learn Screen Notes feature.
Note: This feature can only be accessed from the online Grade Book.
Accessing Learn Screen Notes
To access the Learn Screen Notes feature:
1. | Log in to your online Grade Book. |
2. | Select the Assignments tab. |
3. | Select Curriculum, the select Manage By Curriculum. |
4. | Select the existing custom curriculum or Create New Curriculum if a custom curriculum hasn't been created. |
Note: If you have yet to create a curriculum for your section and are still using the Hawkes' default curriculum, check out our Curriculum article for assistance with creating a new, custom curriculum for your course.
5. On the Edit Curriculum page, select the Lesson name that you would like to edit Learn Screen Notes for under the "Lesson Name" column.
6. | Lesson Builder will open in a new window. On the top-right side, select the "Settings" icon and "Open Learn". |
Learn Screen Notes Features
Once Learn Screen Notes is opened, you can begin adding information to the different Learn pages or replace the entire Learn page with your notes and instructions. Here are the features you have with Learn Screen Notes.
This option will hide the entire Learn page from students. If you would like to hide a specific page from students when they navigate through Learn mode, select the check box for Hide Screen.
Note: Hiding Learn screens will hide the page from all instructors who are using the same curriculum.
This feature will replace the default Learn screen with any information entered by the Instructor. If you would like to replace a Learn screen with your own notes and instructions, select the check box for Replace Screen.
Note: Replacing Learn screens will replace the page for all instructors who are using the same curriculum.
Adding Notes to Learn Mode
Instructors can manually add notes and text to Learn Screen Notes by using the text editor at the bottom of the page. You can add your own text and format it, add images and links, and embed videos into the text editor using iFrame.
Note: Any notes added will be displayed to the student below the default Learn content unless Replace Screen is selected. If Replace Screen is selected, only the notes added by the Instructor will display to students.
After all notes has been added, press Save Changes at the top of the page.
Embedding Videos
Provide your students with visual resources by embedding videos into your Learn Screen Notes. Depending on the location of the video, the method for embedding videos varies.
1. | Open the Youtube video page to embed into the Learn Screen Notes. |
2. | Press the Share button just below the video. |
3. | From the menu that appears, select Embed. |
4. | From the window that opens, copy the entire URL. |
Note: You can manually adjust the width and height of the video from here before copying.
5. | Log in to your online Grade Book and open the Learn Screen Notes editor. |
6. | Press the Source button at the top left-hand corner of the text editor. |
7. | Paste the URL directly into the text editor. |
8. | When finished, press the Source button once more, and then select Save Changes to embed the video into Learn Screen Notes. Students will now have an additional video resource that they can view within Learn mode. |
Note: You can also embed videos from other outside sources such as Geogebra and Desmos.
Learn Screen Notes Navigation
Quickly navigate through Learn mode by selecting Pages in the upper left-hand corner of the screen to receive a selection of the different pages within Learn mode for the lesson.
Navigate through each Learn page one-by-one by using the Next button on the right-hand side of the page. To navigate backwards, use the Prev button on the left-hand side of the page.
View the Learn mode video that is provided to students by pressing the Watch button in the top left-hand corner of the page. Selecting Watch will open HawkesTV and the instructional video pertaining to the content within this particular Lesson.
To close Learn Screen Notes, select the arrow that is pointing left in the top left-hand corner of the page. This will return you to Lesson Builder.
